The interface, much like most of Autodesk/discreet's UIs, hardly change from initial release then on (3ds Max's UI has all but stayed almost exactly the same from Max R4 forward.) until 2008, when Combustion was retired and retooled as Autodesk's, "Toxic," release.
), it's a combination of discreet logic's (the company that released high end SGI titles such as, flame*, inferno*, and smoke*, later acquired by Autodesk to become the discreet division, thus replacing the previous Kinetix division) two popular SGI and MAC programmes: paint*, and, effects*, and designed to dethrone Adobe AfterEffects at that time (which didn't work, as discreet's Combustion 2.1 dropped in price significantly, to ~~$999 USD).

The first Combustion was released as a trial demo with 3ds Max 4 (which will be included when I U/L 3ds Max 4. Regrettably, I don't have the original box since I acquired this in 2015 for a fractional pittance (though it looks just like the 2.1 box pictured below, according to my Autodesk reseller) along with Combustion 3 (which is my next upload ), but all of the paper documentation and tutorial medium is contained on the installation disc. This was (and still is) a very useful and powerful compositor and vector paint programme, a remarkable (and remarkably expensive and rare, ~~ $4000 USD at initial release ) release in that Combustion 2.0 can directly interlink with 3ds Max 4.2 and be used in real time to paint meshes, and apply composite materials and backgrounds within the Max 3D environment, also in real time.
